People dumping their waste without proper segregation are proving to be a major challenge for Thromde in providing the waste segregating facility in the capital. The waste segregating facility, a pilot project initiated by the Thimphu Thromde was started last month.

People can dump their wastes at the allocated dumping yard without having to wait for the garbage collector trucks.

The waste dumping site located just below Kelki Higher Secondary School has five disposal bins for pet bottles, plastics, papers, metals and, food and other wastes.

With the facility picking up its pace steadily, around 10 to 15 people come to dispose of their garbage at the site daily.

However, the workers at the site claim that not many are aware of the fact that they have to bring their waste here, after a proper segregation.

“When we tell people to bring the waste after segregating it they say it is our job to do it. They leave their garbage and go away. If people segregate their waste, it would be helpful,” Dorji Khandu, the Caretaker of the site, said

Aware of the issue, Thrompon Kinlay Dorjee requests the general public to segregate their waste properly before disposing of in the various allocated bins. The Thromde also has plans to expand similar facilities in other parts of the capital.

“We have been observing the pilot project and it is doing well. So, now we are planning to open similar facilities in other parts of the Thimphu town like Changbangdu, Changzamtok, Olakha and Babesa,” Thrompon Kinlay Dorjee said.

Meanwhile, the Thromde has also begun to make manure out of the organic wastes being collected. To further help in managing wastes efficiently, the Thromde is also in talks with schools to refrain students from burning and throwing away their used books.

And in the long run, the Thromde also has plans to install a second-hand shop inside the waste management area where they will sell the reusable toys and other items
