Main accused in Paro RICBL case confesses to embezzling Nu 20 M

The main accused, Rinchen Wangdi involved in Paro Royal Insurance Corporation of Bhutan Limited (RICBL) embezzlement case confessed of embezzling Nu 20 M. The cross-examination of the RICBL embezzlement case was held at Paro District Court on Wednesday.

Richen Wangdi who worked with RICBL as an accountant was alleged of embezzling Nu 140 M.

During the cross-examination, he confessed of embezzling Nu 20 M and other charges like forgery, participation in offences and tampering with documents. He has requested the court to sell his seized assets and refund the amount.

His ally, Yezer Dema, who worked with Bhutan National Bank (BNB) as an IT officer is charged with embezzling Nu 34 M, concealment of corruption and tempering of documents.

She confessed to backdating the statement, however with due process and according to the rules. She denied all other charges.

The banking experts present at the cross-examination said backdating is allowed only in the case of a loan but not with banking.

The prosecutors charged three other men involved with embezzlement case to pay restitution of Nu 500,000, 1 M and 10 M. However, the three men denied their involvement in the case.

Including the main accused, there are 22 individuals charged in the embezzlement case.

According to the Office of the Attorney General, the alleged crime was committed between 2012 to mid-2015. It took the OAG close to a year and a half to review the case. Six attorneys are prosecuting the case.
