Number of black-necked cranes visiting the country has increased over the decades. In 2011 to 2012 winter, 447 black-necked cranes were recorded. While only 225 cranes were sighted in 1991 to 1992 winter. This is as per the study carried out by the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature, RSPN, last month.
The study shows the average growth of the black-necked cranes visiting Bhutan has increased by 3.58percent annually. However, the number of cranes visiting places within the country has seen some changes. Phobjikha valley saw 102 cranes in the winter of 1991 to 1992. The number increased to 335 including 51 juveniles this winter.
Bumdeling received the highest number of black-necked cranes in the 1990’s with 139 birds visiting the area. However, only 102 cranes including 13 juveniles were recorded this winter. Khotakha under Wangduephodrang and Bumthang Dzongkhag saw 5 black-necked cranes respectively. The birds were also sighted in different areas in Thimphu, Ramtokto and Kabisa in December last year. Paro, Lhuentse and Gelephu sighted 12 black-necked cranes altogether.
The RSPN officials assume that the unusual trend might be because the cranes are looking for new habitat or lost their way. The black-necked cranes were counted by the RSPN in collaboration with the Department of Forest and Park Services and volunteers.
