It has been only a month since Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde Office launched waste segregation at source programme. However, it is already catching up with the locals.

Residents are showing full cooperation in sorting out their domestic trash into biodegradable wet waste and non-biodegradable dry waste. Except on Sunday, the thromde’s garbage truck follows 6-day pickup schedule for main municipal area.

In other thromde areas such as Samdrup Jongkhar Toed and Bar, the trash vehicle comes four days a week for waste collection.

“When waste was not segregated, it emitted extremely foul smell and it was unpleasant experience for visitors. Now, the situation has improved as waste is being segregated,” said Seldon, Thromde Tshogpa of Samdrup Jongkhar Maed under Samdrup Jongkhar Thromde.

Residents say segregating household waste is important for the sustainability of the landfills. “Thromde’s waste segregation programme is a good initiative. And segregation has become easier with garbage trucks coming for garbage collection almost daily,” said Kelzang Phuntsho.

Thromde’s waste collector said some people do not segregate waste, so they do the job.

Thromde has also constructed compartment bins each for wet and dry waste. Samdrup Jongkhar Town generates about 5 metric tons of wastes daily.
