Kinga Chogyel and Thinley Wangmo from Phuentshogling Higher Secondary School are the winners of the Under-17 National Badminton Championship.

The latter came first in the girls’ singles and mixed doubles and the former in the boys’ singles and mixed doubles in the finals played yesterday.

Both Kinga Chogyel and Thinley Wangmo began their relationship with badminton since they were in class two. They both want to become national players.

“I never thought I would win and I am grateful to the school for the opportunity,” Kinga Chogyel said.

“After I complete grade 12, I would like to undergo training to enhance my skills.”

In the girls’ doubles, Trashigang Sports Association triumphed, while a team from Thimphu won in the boys’ doubles.

The championship, which began last Friday, was held in Thimphu. Some 68 badminton enthusiasts from five districts took part in it.

It was the first such championship organized by the Bhutan Badminton Federation (BFF) to hunt for young talents.
