Assam festival to mark 50 years of Indo-Bhutan friendship

 As part of golden jubilee celebrations of establishment of formal diplomatic ties between Bhutan and India, the ‘Festival of Assam’ was held in Thimphu yesterday.

The two-day festival began with the lighting of traditional lamp. The Home Minister, Dawa Gyaltshen, in his address to the gathering said, “Since time immemorial, people of Bhutan and Assam have lived in tranquillity, exchanging each other’s rich culture and tradition.”

The minister added Bhutan is committed towards strengthening this age old ties with the government and people of Assam. “The establishment of our consulate in Guwahati in February this year is a reflection of our desire to foster greater cooperation with the people of Assam for a shared future of harmony and prosperity.”

The two-day Assam festival includes B2B meeting between tour operators of Assam and Bhutan, seminar on educational opportunities in Assam for Bhutanese students.

The programme was organised by Indian embassy, and the governments of Bhutan and Assam. Bhutan and India established their bilateral ties in 1968.
