Bumthang is all set to have its first movie theatre by the end of this year. A private individual is constructing the theatre above Chamkhar town.

The construction began in 2015 but works came to a halt due to the ongoing town planning works. Works are set to resume by next month, according to the owner.

Currently, movies are screened mostly in school auditoriums and occasionally in Drayangs. Every year, more than 20 movies are screened in Bumthang. “We really need a cinema hall here,” Jigme Tenzin, a Chamklhar resident said.

“There are lots of difficulties in screening movies here without a theater. In schools, there are issues when the screening coincides with examinations.”

“It will be a lot convenient for us if there’s a movie theater here,” Kado, another resident shared. “There are a good number of movie fans here. Moreover, since Bumthang has always been associated with spirituality and revered as a holy place, movies with religious themes attract a lot of crowd.”

The two-storied cinema hall under construction will be one of the largest in the country, according to the owner. It will have about 350 seats.
