Towards improving the country’s adult literacy rate from 53 to 70 percent in the 12th Five Year Plan, the education ministry met with local leaders and other relevant stakeholders of Monggar, Lhuentse and Trashi Yangtse.

The two day workshop held in Monggar, which ended yesterday, came up with recommendations on budget, cooperation, monitoring, accountability, strategic plan and timing to improve non-formal education at the dzongkhag and gewog levels.

Norbu Gyeltshen, the Chief Programme Officer of the Department of Adult and Higher Education (DAHE) of the education ministry said the workshop has helped the participants understand what Non-Formal Education (NFE) is and its importance.

He added the workshop provided an opportunity to sit with them and draw a strategic plan on how to improve adult literacy rate in their gewogs.

“The concrete outcome from these two days workshop was we were able to draw out plans on their concerned gewogs on how to really speed up NFE program.”

The resolutions will be submitted to the education ministry for review and implementation.

Currently, there are over a thousand Non-Formal Education learners in Monggar, Lhuentse and Trashi Yangtse.
