Villagers in Philooma Chiwog under Orong Gewog, Samdrup Jongkhar have been taking up Tsazo, a bamboo craft business since four years ago. This business was never been tried out by the villagers, earlier.

Today, a sizeable number of villagers are engaged in the Tsazo business and they are making good money out of it.

Their products are baskets and trays, among others.

“Four years ago, we could barely sell one or two bamboo products. But now, more products are being sold and we have also formed a group,” said a villager, Pema Tshering.

Another local, Tobgay, said producing bamboo products has proven to be a lucrative business.

Samdrup Jongkhar Dzongkhag Forest Office trained the villagers to make bamboo items.

To keep the business afloat for all times to come, the government provides budget to Philooma Chiwog annually.

Currently, villagers are occupied in making bamboo baskets, worth Nu 42,000 for the upcoming Moenlam Chenmo or the great prayer ceremony in Samdrup Jongkhar.
