The residents of Wangdue Phodrang are battling dust pollution. Widening works of the East-West Highway has aggravated the problem, especially for the commuters and students.
Residents had already been suffering from dust pollution since the start of hydropower projects.
“This place is mostly dusty. Once the cutting works started the situation has become worse. Children, especially infants, are all suffering from cough and cold,” said a resident, Kencho Dema.
Another resident, Kamala said her childern’s unforms are covered in dust when they return home from school. “Many are sick. There is dust everywhere.”
Wangdue Primary School, which is located near the highway, is the worst hit area due to the dust.
The school has 960 students.
“Exams are nearing. We are concerned about students falling sick during exam. We have asked students to use facemask regularly,” said Wangdue Primary School’s Principal Nima Dorji.
The school has also requested the Department of Roads to come up with measures.
According to the Department of Roads’ Chief Engineer, G. M Rai they sprinkle water in the dusty areas.
The department has also asked the concerned contractors to regularly sprinkle water in the dusty areas.
He said the black topping will be carried out as soon as possible.
