rma-releases-commemorative-banknotes The Royal Monetary Authority (RMA) released commemorative banknotes of Nu 1000 denomination to celebrate the Birth of His Royal Highness The Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck. Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay launched the commemorative notes.

The banknote bears the commemorative message celebrating the Birth of His Royal Highness The Gyalsey. His Royal Highness was born in Lingkana Palace in Thimphu on February 5, this year.rma-releases-commemorative-banknotes

The note also has the prefix “W” to mark the reign of the Wangchuck Dynasty.

The colour and all other features of the note are the same as the Nu 1000 notes already in circulation. More than three million pieces of the commemorative banknote were printed by the central bank in Germany.

People can buy this note for an equivalent value from the central bank. The Commemorative Banknotes can be used along with the other currency notes and will be put into circulation and available through the banks.

The central bank also launched a scheme to provide Foreign Currency Account facility for Non-Resident Bhutanese. The scheme is in recognition of the significant role that inward foreign currency remittance can play in boosting the country’s foreign exchange reserves and promote savings.

The facility is to enable Bhutanese living abroad to send their earnings and savings to their personal foreign currency accounts in Bhutan.
