Adversity in absence of a bridgeVillagers of Rama under Chang Gewog in Thimphu are facing numerous problems in absence of a bridge. The 50-year-old bridge, which connected the village to the rest of the gewog, collapsed last month.

Many owning land on the other side of the river have not been able to continue their farm works.

For the parents, it has come down to escorting their children to school. They have to wake up their children in the wee hours so that they make it to school safely on time.

“We have to send our children to school as early as 6 in the morning,” said a parent, Dechen.

A villager, Kinley said they have to take a detour from Depsi to reach their dairy products to the other side.

The absence of a bridge has also hampered development activities in the village.

Gewog administration said they have identified an area to construct a temporary bridge until the permanent bridge comes through.

Chang Gup, Ugyen said they could not undertake the construction as the level of Wanchhu River has risen due to continuous rain.

“We are expecting the level of Wangchhu to decrease as the weather is improving.”

Officials from the Ministry of Works and Human Settlement said a log bridge will be constructed as a temporary measure.

The tender for the construction of bridge has been put out.  The construction is expected to cost Nu 18 M.
