Pharmacological treatment seekers increasingThe number of alcohol dependents, seeking pharmacological treatment, has been increasing. But not many Opioid dependents- those suffering from medical conditions that characterise the compulsive use of Opioid such as morphine and heroin, among other- are coming forward for the treatment.

Pharmacological treatment is a form of medical care offered to Opiod and alcohol dependents where the illicit drug being used is replaced with licit drug with a similar reaction.

The aim of the project was to treat at least 100 patients.

Pharmacological treatment started in August, last year, for Opioid and alcohol dependents. Around 37 alcohol dependents are being treated today against only four opioid dependents.

The family members of those who are alcohol dependent are more supportive as compared to the family members of Opioid dependent, according to Nurse In-Charge of Psychiatric Ward under JDWNR Hospital in Thimphu, Sonam Choki.“It is because Opioid is illegal and those who are Opioid dependents are of younger age between 20-30. They fear consequences from their parents and law.”

She said they will not face any legal consequences if they come forward to seek treatment.

For those living outside Thimphu, it is difficult for them to seek pharmacological treatment. Most of the Opioid dependents, currently seeking help, are not from Thimphu. Some are from Paro and some from Phuentshogling.

Sonam Choki said it is difficult for them because they have to some to the hospital ward everyday for a dose licit drug.

The treatment focuses on effectively controlling the patient’s craving for alcohol and illicit Opioids. Opioid substitution treatment is implemented in 80 countries around the world.
