A global blockchain data and artificial intelligence (AI) company operating in over 30 countries, Nansen, formally opened its office in Thimphu today. The company’s office is at the Bhutan Youth Development Fund’s Nazhoen Pelri Complex. The company says its presence in Bhutan is part of its global expansion and will also create opportunities for Bhutanese talent in the Gelephu Mindfulness City.
Nansen’s Group Chief Executive Officer, Alex Svanevik, led the opening.
The company says the Bhutan office represents an important step in its global expansion and its efforts to build a local talent base in the GMC.
The CEO said, “The first step is to make sure that we have a local team. Obviously, not everything is ready in GMC yet, so we currently have our office here in Thimphu. However, over time, we hope to become one of the most desirable employers in Bhutan’s private sector.”
As of now, Nansen has recruited four Bhutanese.
It also launched the Nansen AI Talent Programme, which aims to identify and develop Bhutanese talent in AI and other emerging technologies. Under the programme, three interns are currently learning at the office, with the possibility of being recruited by the company in the future.
The company said that its key focus of operating in Bhutan will be to develop local expertise alongside a global talent pool.
“The hope is that we will hire at least one of the people from the AI talent programme, maybe even all of them. Let’s see. But we are basically hiring in many different areas across the company. We have already recruited people in customer support, blockchain and compliance, and we will also be looking at more technical areas, such as data science, machine learning, AI and cybersecurity, among others,” said Alex Svanevik, the CEO.
Earlier this year, GMC and Nansen announced a strategic collaboration to establish an operational presence within GMC.
The collaboration aims to strengthen GMC’s long-term strategy of building a credible, institutionally aligned digital asset ecosystem, grounded in transparency, governance, and analytical rigour. By embedding analytics expertise locally, the partnership is expected to enhance visibility into on-chain activity and support informed participation across the ecosystem.
The establishment of its office in the country comes as the country continues to explore opportunities in emerging technologies and build GMC as a global hub of innovation and technology.
