More than 50 people from across the country received free surgery at a week-long surgery camp in Paro. The camp was organised by the Tarayana Foundation, last week, to correct cleft lips and injuries caused by burns and wild animal attacks. The foundation also provided food, accommodation and travel expenses to financially disadvantaged patients.
A group of 17 volunteers from Surgicorps International are carrying out the surgeries. Surgicorps International is a nonprofit organization. It provides free surgical and medical care to disadvantaged individuals in developing countries. Dr. Jack Demos is leading the group. He has been coming to Bhutan once every year since 2007.
The Tarayana Foundation organised the camp for the first time in 2007. Around 450 people have benefitted so far from the project.
