Bhutan beat Sri Lanka in World cup qualifier- 2015Bhutan’s football team made history today by defeating Sri Lanka in the country’s first ever World Cup qualifying match with 1-0. Bhutan’s midfielder, Tshering Dorji, netted the winning goal in 86th minute.

The match was played in Sri Lankan capital, Colombo.

“We were able to win because of hard work put in by the team and acclimatisation,” said Bhutan’s coach, Choki Nima. Bhutan’s team had undergone a week-long acclimatisation training in Bangkok, Thailand.

The first half of the match had ended in a goalless draw.

Second half opened with Sri Lanka’s team playing offensive. They also had maximum ball possessions.

Striker Chencho Gyeltshen dribbled past Lankan defender and attempted to score. However, it was saved by Sri Lanka’s goalie. The ball had deflected back after hitting the goalie’s right foot. Tshering Dorji seized the opportunity and found the back of the net.

Despite Bhutan’s lowly position of 209 in FIFA ranking, Sri Lanka, with 36 positions above Bhutan, could not find an equaliser.

Sri Lankan’s coach, Nilola Kavazovic said he never expected Bhutanese team to play the way they did today. “I am surprised.”

The second leg of the match will be played at Changlimithang in Thimphu on March, 17.
