Dasho Tshering Wangchuk is Supreme Court’s new Chief Justice

HM-ChiefJustice-His Majesty the King appointed Justice Dasho Tshering Wangchuk  as the new Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, today.

The Constitution states the Chief Justice of Bhutan shall be appointed from among the Drangpons of the Supreme Court or from among eminent Jurists by the Druk Gyalpo, by warrant under His hand and seal in consultation with the National Judicial Commission.

As a special gesture, His Majesty also conferred the orange scarf to Dasho Tshering Wangchuk in recognition of his services to the Judiciary and the Nation.

Prior to his appointment, Lyonpo Tshering Wangchuk, 51, served as the Supreme Court’s Justice.

From 2006-10, Lyonpo worked as the High Court’s Drangpon. Before that he was the Judicial Officer with the High Court.

He began his career as Trainee Officer with High Court in 1987.

Chief Justice Lyonpo Tshering Wangchuk also served as second lieutenant in the Royal Bhutan Army from 1991-1995.

Lyonpo Tshering Wangchuk completed LL.M in the field of International Law and Judicial Process from George Washington University, USA.

He attended Dr. Graham’s School in Kalimpong, India. He went to Sherubtse Junior College in Kanglung for high school and graduated from St. Stephen’s College in Delhi, India.

Lyonpo has also been involved in drafting and reviewing several Bills, including Domestic Violence Bill, Adoption Bill, and the Child Care and Protection Bill.

Chief Justice Lyonpo Tshering Wangchuk is a recipient of the Druk Yuegyal medal, the highest military honor as a member of the Militia awarded by His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

He also received His Majesty the Fifth Druk Gyalpo’s Coronation Gold Medal in 2008. Lyonpo was conferred the Red Scarf by His Majesty December 17, 2013.
