contrabandSubsPolice in Thimphu have arrested seven men for substance abuse and related crime. The seven arrests were made between Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning.

According to the Narcotic Drugs and Other Vices Division, substance abuse continues to be a rising problem in the country, with as many as 800 related arrests between December last year and this year.

A 24-year-old college student and a friend were arrested from Chuzom check point. They were found carrying over a thousand tablets. Both were said to be under the influence of drugs at the time of arrest.

The other arrest, also at Chuzom check point, Tuesday night, was a 35-year-old man who was carrying several bottles and tablets of substances.

Following a tip-off from an informer last evening, the Police also arrested a 30-year-old man from his residence in Changzamtog in the capital. The man was also found in possession of over a hundred drug tablets. He also tested positive for drugs.

The fifth arrest, yesterday morning, was a 22-year-old man from the Chuzom check post, in possession of several tablets.

All five are under police custody.

Two others, both in their late twenties, were  arrested in the wee hours of Wednesday, in Olakha.
