Infectious Bursal Disease containedThe Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD), which killed thousands of birds in Sarpang and Tsirang, has now been controlled. However, the livestock officials are still investigating the origin and causes of the disease.

The National Poultry Development Centre in Sarpang, stopped selling chicks and poultry products to the farmers after over 9,000 birds died of IBD since April this year.

The disease has been confirmed under control but the gewog livestock officials are continuing to visit affected poultry farms and spraying medicines.

The IBD affects birds between three to six weeks old. And unlike the bird flu, it does not pose a threat to human life.

Poultry farm business

Since the outbreak of the disease, some of the farmers wishing to set up poultry farms have suspended the idea for the time being.

Juda Bir Galley from Dekidling Gewog is one of them. He has all the documents from the gewog required to set up a poultry farm. Once the disease is fully contained, Juda Bir is hoping to start a poultry farm.

“Some poultry owners, who had six hundred birds, are now left with just forty because of the disease. So I am keeping the documents ready to set up a poultry farm only after the disease is completely contained,” said Juda Bir Galley.

He said, if not for such diseases, running a poultry farm is easy and profitable.
