Suspension of boat operation across Moa RiverPeople of Chhuzanggang Gewog in Saprang are not happy with the suspension of boat operation across Moa River.

The directive, to do away the boat operation, had come from the Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs following the recent boat tragedy in Zhemgang Dzongkhag.

Boat is as an important mode of transportation for the people of four gewogs across the Mao River. Although, there is a motorable bridge over the Thewar River, people still prefer to use the boat as it is cheaper and cuts down the distance.

A resident of Chhuzanggang Gewog, Sangay Tshering, said it costs them Nu. 100 for a trip to Gelephu in a taxi. It is costs them about Nu. 60-70 if they take the bus from Umling. “We spent about Nu. 15-20 by boat.”

Another resident, Tshering, said bus has a limited capacity to carry passengers. “Sometimes, the road gets blocked due to mudslide so we have to use the boat.”

People said instead of suspending the service, government should look at ways to enhance safety. “The ferryman should be experienced. The boat should not carry more people than what it is designed to carry,” said Sangay Tshering.

Chencho, who is also lives in Chhuzanggang said His Majesty has granted safety jackets. “If it could be used it will be good but we need the boat service.”

The gewog administration has decided to put the concerns raised by the people to the Dzongkhag administration and the dungkhag office.
