Former PM and DPT President submits resignation

DPT-President-Submits ResignationThe Speaker of the National Assembly, who formally joined the office from today, is going through the resignation letter of the former Prime Minister and Druk Phuensum Tshogpa (DPT) President Jigmi Y Thinley. The President had submitted his resignation letter on Wednesday.

According to sources the resignation letter was submitted to the Secretary General of National Assembly, as the Speaker was not elected then.

The Speaker, Jigme Zangpo, said he needed to study all provisions of laws, legal procedure before accepting the resignation. He added that they needed to study the implication beyond 2013.

According to the National Assembly Act of 2008, the Member’s seat will be vacant upon resignation, death, disqualification or removal and expiration of the term office. Apart from that, if a Member remains absent for more than one-fourth of the number of days in a session without the permission of the House, his or her seat shall be declared to be vacant. The Act also states that if Member’s seat becomes vacant, an election to fill the vacancy shall be issued within one month. The election shall be held within 90 days as from the date of vacancy.
