Royal Textile Academy formally launched

RTA--Inaugural..The Royal Textile Academy was formally launched in the capital, today. The patron and Chairperson of the academy, Her Majesty the Queen Mother, Sangay Choden Wangchuck, inaugurated the Academy.

The academy’s new building houses state of art museum that showcases collection of regional textiles artifacts. There is also a weaving centre which will be used to train school students in the art of weaving and contemporary skills related to fashion design and merchandising. The conservation unit will render support in conserving textiles artifacts across the country.

As part of the programme, the Queen Mother launched an exhibition catalogue book called “Thagzo.” The Queen Mother also awarded cash prizes to the winners of national design competition held in May this year.

The Royal Textile Academy was founded by Her Majesty the Queen Mother Sangay Choden Wangchuck in 2005, as a non-profit, Non-government Civil Society Organization.

It was established to preserve and promote particularly the textile arts and the thirteen arts in general.

About Nu.170 million was spent to construct the academy.
