Bhutan is looking at new ways to strengthen primary healthcare and move closer to achieving universal health coverage. The three-day National Primary Health Care Forum 2026 is being held in Tsirang for the first time. The forum brings together healthcare professionals, policymakers, partners and other stakeholders to explore ways to make primary healthcare more accessible, responsive and people-centred.
Held under the theme “Reimagining Primary Health Care for Universal Health Coverage,” the forum provides a platform for participants to share experiences, exchange ideas and discuss innovative approaches to strengthening primary healthcare delivery and to identify priorities and share approaches towards building a stronger and more responsive primary healthcare system in the country.
The forum also provides a platform for healthcare professionals and stakeholders to reflect on existing practices, identify gaps and explore practical solutions to make primary healthcare more effective and people-centred.
The forum is deliberating on Bhutan’s roadmap towards Universal Health Coverage, with discussions focusing on health-sector governance, the role of local governments and communities, digital health, the health workforce, traditional medicine and sustainable health financing.
“We need strong primary healthcare that can prevent illness, detect it early, manage chronic conditions and refer appropriately when specialist care is required. This is not about reducing hospital care; it is about making the whole health system better,” said Health Minister Tandin Wangchuk.
“Healthcare should reach people where they live, close to their families and communities. This principle is just as relevant today. As our demography changes and our health challenges become more complex. Primary healthcare has become more relevant,” said Pemba Wangchuk, Health Secretary.
Tomorrow, the forum will see discussions on strengthening the health workforce, the role of traditional medicine in primary healthcare, and integrating palliative care into primary healthcare, among other key areas.
