As Gelephu continues its transformation under the Gelephu Mindfulness City initiative, road maintenance works are now being intensified across the thromde, with authorities aiming to achieve what they call a “zero pothole” town. While the ongoing works are causing temporary inconvenience in some areas, many residents say the upgrades are long overdue and will bring safer and smoother travel in the long run.
Resurfacing works and maintenance teams have become a common sight across different parts of Gelephu town as the thromde begins one of its major road maintenance efforts this year.
The works are being carried out in several locations under the thromde area to improve road conditions and enhance safety for commuters and residents.
For many drivers, especially taxi operators who spend most of their day on the roads, the maintenance works are already bringing hope for better driving conditions despite the current inconvenience.
“Right now, there are temporary problems like dust and uneven road sections while the maintenance works are going on. But once the works are completed, we are hopeful that the roads will become much better and smoother for everyone,” said Sangay Wangdi, a taxi driver, Gelephu.
“Earlier, roads were not smooth and needed proper maintenance. We are happy that the works are finally being carried out and we hope it will improve travel and make commuting easier in Gelephu,” said Mon Bahadur Rai, another taxi driver, Gelephu.
“At present, some roads are narrow and difficult to navigate in certain areas. We believe these works will improve the road conditions and help all road users in the future,” said Bhim Bahadur Tamang, also a taxi driver, Gelephu.
According to Gelephu Thromde officials overseeing the road maintenance works, similar repair and maintenance activities had also been carried out in previous years. However, some stretches could not receive attention due to various challenges.
This year, however, thromde officials say the approach is more systematic and focused, with the larger goal of achieving “zero potholes” across Gelephu. The works include resurfacing damaged road sections, repairing worn-out stretches, and removing bumps along the roads to improve driving conditions.
“We have planned and estimated a budget with the priority of keeping Gelephu free from potholes. The main objective is to ensure public safety and provide a smooth driving experience for both residents and visitors coming to Gelephu,” said Tshering Norbu, Gelephu Thrompon.
The thromde administration has requested the public for patience and cooperation during the maintenance period, assuring that efforts are being made to complete the works as quickly as possible. The road maintenance project, which began earlier this month, is being carried out at an estimated cost of around Nu 9 M.
