As part of the national effort to address growing substance abuse and youth-related challenges in the country, the Chithuen Phendey Association has been conducting structured prevention and awareness programmes across the country. The association is currently in Samtse, making it the second-last district to be covered under the initiative.
The “Yes, We Care” drug prevention and awareness campaign is calling on parents to engage actively with their children, educators to provide holistic guidance, and policymakers to implement evidence-based interventions.
It also urges communities to create environments where young people feel valued, supported, and empowered to make positive choices.
Ugyen Kelzang, the programme coordinator of Chithuen Phendey Association said, “Firstly, we all understand how important our youths are. His Majesty’s address during the 115th National Day emphasised that even one youth should not get spoilt because of drugs. Our main motive is to enhance support to our youth because youths are our jewels.”
Senior Dzongrab of Samtse, Choki Wangchuk, said, “We are grateful for initiating such a programme. With modernisation, our youth can get exposed to such issues. So, if such programmes are not initiated, forget about serving the country; they will not be in a position to even stand on their own.”
Likewise, participant like Gelay Wangmo said, “I feel that this programme is really important. It has taught us the importance of adverse childhood experiences. It will help us understand what we should do and understand about a child’s development. Secondly, there was real-life experience sharing, and that I feel is very important because talking about the issue by sharing experience makes more impact.”
Excluding Samtse, the association which is a registered CSO has so far conducted similar campaigns in 18 districts since 2023, reaching schools, communities, parents, local leaders, religious institutions, and other relevant stakeholders.
In Samtse, the campaign which began recently will continue until 3rd of next month covering schools, offices, and other relevant groups.
Officials say Chhukha will be the last district to be covered, with the campaign scheduled for later this year.
