The construction of the Multidisciplinary Super-Speciality Hospital in Thimphu is expected to be completed by 2030. According to the health minister, the project is progressing as planned. Once completed, the new hospital will play a critical role in restructuring Bhutan’s healthcare system. The update was shared during the Meet the Press session yesterday.
According to the minister, the existing national referral hospital will be freed up, refurbished, and renovated to function as the Thimphu General Hospital.
Meanwhile, the new Multidisciplinary Super-Speciality Hospital will become the country’s primary national referral hospital, providing specialised care.
The new hospital will be constructed within the existing national referral hospital campus. It will offer advanced super-specialist medical services, such as organ transplants, cancer treatment, and other specialised care.
Health Minister Tandin Wangchuk said, “As per the Detailed Project Report, DPR, the detailed design and engineering drawings will need to be completed by February 2027, construction will need to start by April 2027, and the hospital will need to be completed by 2030.’’
The minister also said that constructing a high-end super-speciality hospital involves significant technical challenges due to limited domestic technical expertise and experience.
‘‘Globally, super-speciality hospitals are developed by highly specialized firms that integrate sophisticated requirements relating to infection prevention and control, patient flow systems, medical engineering, accessibility standards, and other complex hospital design features. Despite these challenges, the government remains fully committed to delivering this important national project in a timely and efficient manner for the long-term benefit of the people of Bhutan.’’
The new hospital will be designed as a people-friendly hospital.
The preparatory process for the project began on 13 December 2024. It is one of the flagship initiatives of the health sector under the 13th Five-Year Plan.
