Repairs planned for worsening Simtokha–Dochula highway

Regular travellers on the Simtokha–Dochula highway can expect some relief soon. The stretch, which has deteriorated over the past few months, is expected to be repaired within this month.

The route leading to Dochula, one of the country’s key landmarks, is in urgent need of maintenance in several stretches.

About two kilometres above the Hongtsho area, the road is riddled with potholes, with the blacktop on one side gradually eroding.
Commuters say this is causing inconvenience and raising safety concerns.

“We travel frequently, but one side is badly damaged. Most drivers are forced to use a single lane, which increases the risk of accidents. So, I feel the road needs to be repaired,” said Dendup, a guide in Thimphu.

Gembo Tshering, a driver said, “We use this road often with tourists. Maintenance has been carried out, and the government has made efforts, but the condition remains poor.”

According to the Department of Surface Transport, the issue is not due to poor-quality materials. The extreme weather conditions have caused last year’s resurfacing work to fail.

The contractor has already carried out rectification works four times, with more repairs planned.

“We have inspected the area and finalised a plan. Work will begin soon. While unfavourable weather delayed earlier efforts, we are now targeting completion within this month, or by mid-April,” said Tshering Wangchuk, an executive engineer with the department.

Officials say the road meets primary national highway standards, and no sections have been identified as accident-prone.

The repair works are expected to begin soon, with a budget of around Nu 4 M for a smoother and safer journey.
