What began as a solution to Thimphu’s drainage problems is now affecting residents and businesses, as drain upgrades continue across several areas of Thimphu Thromde. Large trenches dug in front of houses and shops have made access difficult. Residents say the situation is affecting businesses and posing safety risks.
In the Changangkha area in Thimphu, the drain upgrade works are ongoing. Workers have dug up sections of the roadside and footpaths, leaving open trenches. The work began in November last year but has yet to be completed.
The situation is similar in Motithang and the City Core areas.
Pedestrians and parents say the open and dug-up drains along footpaths have created safety risks, especially for school-going children. Some residents also say that certain work sites lack proper safety measures.
“As parents, we fear our children might fall into the open drains. Drains are dug up everywhere, so we have to constantly watch and escort them. The Thromde and contractors are doing their best, but it would be better if more attention were given to safety,” said Tashi Phuntsho, a parent.
Business owners in the affected areas say the prolonged construction is hampering their operations. They say customers find it difficult to access their shops.
“It is very inconvenient. Even when customers come, many turn back because they are afraid to cross the small temporary bridge placed over the drain. There is no other access to my shop. Earlier, when there was a proper footpath, my business was doing well. But it has been three months now, and my sales have dropped. I am even struggling to pay the rent,” said Sancha Lama, a shopkeeper in Changangkha.
Kezang Yuden, another shopkeeper said, “Since the drain and footpath are dug up, I hardly received any customers. I even had to close my shop for two months. I understand that they are working and I do not want it to stop, but I would be grateful if it could be completed a little faster.”
The dug-up drains, blocked entrances, and uneven walkways are also slowing traffic in the area.
With many work sites temporarily idle, BBS could only meet a few workers. They said the work is sometimes paused to allow the concrete to set. They also added that construction during winter is challenging due to ice and the continuous flow of water in the drains.
BBS contacted Thimphu Thromde for comments on the works. However, officials declined to comment, stating that the project is nearing completion.
The Thromde office has issued a public notice on its social media page, urging residents to cooperate and remain cautious.
