Farmers in Pema Gatshel are seeing new opportunities with the opening of a two-storey Integrated Vegetable Market Shed in Denchi town. Inaugurated on Thursday by the minister for agriculture and livestock, the facility is expected to ease marketing challenges and support local trade.
From vegetables to dairy products and fruits, farmers can now bring their fresh farm produce and sell here.
Earlier, farmers had no proper marketplace to sell their produce, relying only on a temporary shed in the town.
Sonam Dorji, a farmer said, “In the past, we faced many difficulties because we did not have a proper place to sell our produce. Now, with the government constructing this market shed, it will benefit us greatly.”
Tshewang Lhadon, another farmer said, “Although we work hard to harvest our crops, selling them was always a challenge. Now that we have been instructed to bring our products here, we are very happy. We will be selling our produce here every Saturday or Sunday as instructed.”
The integrated market shed was built at a cost of around 17 million ngultrum, funded by the CARLEP project and the government.
Farmers said the shed will not only help them earn better income but also motivate them to increase production and contribute to the country’s food security.
