As more graduates look beyond Bhutan for higher studies, the Institute of Science of Mind at Simtokha in Thimphu is working to upgrade its degree certification to meet international standards. While its degree is recognised nationally, the institute is now working with the Bhutan Qualifications and Professionals Certification Authority to align it with international standards within this year.
Since its establishment in 2014, about 400 students graduated from the Institute of Science of Mind in seven batches. Currently, more than 400 students are enrolled at the institute, pursuing its only programme, the Bachelor of Arts in Language and Buddhist Studies.
Tenzin Wangchuk, President of Institute of Science of Mind, Central Monastic Body said, “The Buddha dharma helps mental wellbeing by sorting knowledge and flaws which helps fulfill the unique philosophy of Gross National Happiness. Hence, the institute was established.”
Currently, the institute is certified by the Council for Buddhist University under the Central Monastic Body.
Concerns surfaced that the institute’s degree certificate does not carry the accreditation required for direct entry into relevant master’s programmes abroad. For many graduates, the path to higher studies overseas appears delayed, with doors opening only after years of work experience.
However, the institute clarified that while general Buddhist studies may offer fewer master’s programmes globally, there are still relevant and appropriate postgraduate courses available for graduates to pursue.
The President said, “The focus of studies here is primarily on Buddhist knowledge systems, whereas at the international level, academic programmes tend to emphasise fields such as economics and technology, which are often closely linked to business. As a result, much research and study goals are shaped by market-oriented priorities. However, it is not accurate to say that graduates of Buddhist studies lack opportunities to pursue further studies abroad. Such opportunities do exist.”
He added that the institute has sent eight individuals on full scholarships to pursue master’s degrees at Nan Tien Institute in Sydney, Australia.
The institute is exploring more opportunities to support its graduates in pursuing further studies.
“At the national level, our certificate is well recognised, and around 200 of our students are working in the country. To meet international standards, there is always an authority that accredits qualifications. Similarly, in our country, we have the Bhutan Qualifications and Professional Certification Authority, and we are working with them to get our programme approved.”
He added that, beyond enhancing accreditation and supporting graduates, the institute seeks to extend the reach of the Buddha dharma through its students, for a greater good.
