The Bhutan Paralympic Committee continues to struggle financially as the number of athletes it supports increases. To help alleviate some of these challenges, the committee signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Bhutan Insurance Limited in Thimphu today. Under the MoU, Bhutan Insurance Limited will provide Nu 700,000 annually for the next two years to support the committee’s programmes and activities. Her Royal Highness Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck, President of the Bhutan Paralympic Committee, graced the signing ceremony.
The Bhutan Paralympic Committee says government support has stayed the same, but the growing number of athletes is putting pressure on its limited resources.
The committee’s secretary general said the current budget is not enough to buy the necessary sports equipment and provide adequate training, especially for international competitions. So far, four para-athletes have taken part in 19 international competitions.
He added that the committee needs to seek financial support from interested private organisations rather than relying solely on government funding.
The committee currently has about 15 para-athletes, and the number is increasing as a result of their awareness programmes.
“Such funding will help us procure more equipment and provide additional training to better prepare our athletes for international competitions. We also have plans to seek further financial support from other private companies. With this support, we will be able to assist even more athletes,” said Sonam Karma Tshering, Secretary General, Bhutan Paralympic Committee.
An official from the Bhutan Insurance Limited said their support is expected to encourage more companies to come forward and contribute to the development of Paralympic sports in the country.
“The reason we decided to partner with the committee is because of the inclusivity we prioritise. As we all know, para-athletes strive for excellence and work hard to become champions. In this way, Bhutan Insurance Limited, in our own small capacity, wants to contribute and support their journey,” said Sonam Tobgay, Director, Operations and IT, Bhutan Insurance Limited.
The funding is expected to enhance training opportunities, improve access to equipment, and support the overall growth of Paralympic sports in the country.
Established in 2017, the Bhutan Paralympic Committee inspires athletes with disabilities and provides them with opportunities to participate and excel in sports.
