With the Bhutan Standards Bureau mandating the permit for only BSB-certified goods starting January next year, nearly 250 clients have undergone product certification so far. As the implementation date nears, BSB officials are creating awareness across the country to avoid misinformation and initiate a smooth implementation.
The notification issued by Bhutan Standards Bureau earlier this year declared 15 products that require BSB certification. The list includes products such as pipes, roofing sheets, and cement, among others. According to BSB officials, only products certified by the bureau or those meeting standards equal to or higher than Bhutan’s will be permitted in the country through authorised dealers.
“To get BSB certified, one should first apply with details of the product. Details of the standard should also be mentioned. Accordingly, we will then visit their factory and carry out necessary inspections,” said Lobzang Dorji, the director of BSB.
During their awareness programme in Phuentshogling, BSB officials said the new regulation aims to curb the inflow of substandard products and ensure public health and safety. About 50 business people took part in the awareness programme.
“Today, we had an awareness programme on BSB certification, and this is helpful. The new regulation will be implemented from next year, and we will be dealing only with quality products. This will benefit the Bhutanese people,” said Raj Kumar, a businessman in Phuentshogling.
BSB officials said this will not affect the cost of the products.
Lobzang Dorji said, “People have the freedom to choose where to buy. For instance, there are four certified cement dealers whose standards we have approved, so customers can purchase from any of them. However, if there were only one dealer, the price would likely be affected.”
As per BSB officials, they will also carry out inspections and monitoring after the certification. Officials hope the initiative will not only strengthen consumer trust but also promote a culture of quality and safety across all sectors in the country.
