Media urged to reflect women’s voices for balanced representation

More often than not, media coverage reflects men’s perspectives, overshadowing women’s voices. With women holding just over four per cent of seats in the National Assembly, their representation remains limited. During a two-day workshop on inclusive journalism, politicians and local leaders shared that women’s underrepresentation in the media further limits balanced and inclusive decision-making.

Today, there are only three women in Parliament — two in the National Assembly and one in the National Council, elected by the people. Among the 205 Gups across the country, only nine are women.

Sangay Lham, the Gup of Shaba in Paro, is among the few women serving in local government. She says earning the community’s trust took time and perseverance.

Sangay Lham said, “Since there were no female gups until now, I think people had doubts about whether a woman could represent them. But now that I’ve served for years and fulfilled my duties, I believe I’ve earned their trust.”

For her, when media stories are dominated by male perspectives, it often results in biased portrayals of social issues.

It also limits visibility for women leaders and discourages others from aspiring to similar roles.

“We’re looking at how journalism can report not just the conflicts and challenges, but also shine a light on role models. People making a difference in society, tackling local issues in their communities. Their voices, views, and actions should be reflected in the news to give us the bigger picture,” said Siok Sian Pek Dorji, a facilitator.

At the workshop attended by 15 journalists, the organisers expressed hope that Bhutanese newsrooms will work towards reflecting not only the country’s stories but also the diversity of the people behind them.

Siok Sian Pek Dorji said,“Journalism always tries to be inclusive. We share the views of both sides of any matter or issue. In this context, it’s about covering gender and governance. We’re talking about being more inclusive to ensure that gender perspectives are also taken into consideration.”

“We had the Gup of Shaba here as a speaker today. Listening to her talk about the challenges she faced as a female gup and how she overcame them, I saw how women should come forward. They can make a real difference,” said Tashi Tshewang, a journalist from Bhutan Today.

“As journalists, when we report, we must ensure we present balanced opinions. Gender inclusiveness is part of that. News is the bridge between policymakers and the people. If we do this well, I’m sure it will make a huge difference,” said Kinley Wangmo, a reporter with Kuensel.

The workshop served as a reminder that inclusive journalism not only strengthens representation but also builds a more equitable and informed society.
