Bhutanese junior tennis players delivered strong performances at the Asia Tennis Federation (ATF) Under-14 Tennis Tournament 2025. The five-day tournament saw 30 players from Bhutan, India, Hong Kong, and Australia competing in both singles and doubles categories.
In the Girls’ Singles, 14-year-old Kelzang Lhatsho Tshering, a student of Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School, emerged as the champion. She defeated Sangay Lhazin in the final yesterday. Eight girls competed in this category.
Kelzang Lhatsho Tshering said, “There were not many girls to play doubles. That’s why we couldn’t participate in the doubles event. But I hope that next time there will be enough girls to play doubles so we can gain more experience and exposure, improve our skills, and understand the differences between players from other countries and us.”
In the Boys’ Singles, Mahijith Singh Kaura from India won the title.
He beat Kuendhen Rigsel Dorjee of Bhutan in straight sets this morning.
The 14-year-old Indian player has also won national championships in India earlier this year.
Mahijith Singh Kaura said, “I am feeling thrilled after winning the tournament. It was nice to play here. The environment is nice, it’s green all around, and it was a good tournament.”
Mahijith later teamed up with Kuendhen Rigsel Dorjee to win the Doubles title.
Kuendhen Rigsel Dorjee said, “We will gain valuable experience if more such tournaments are hosted in our country in the future. Moreover, we will be able to compete equally with them.”
Certificates and trophies were awarded to the winners and runners-up in all categories.
The tournament, held in Thimphu, concluded today.
