Bhutan and Switzerland are celebrating 40 years of diplomatic relations this year, marking a significant milestone in their enduring friendship. To commemorate the occasion, Swiss Federal Councillor and Head of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, Ignazio Cassis, is on a two-day visit to Bhutan. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, such high-level visits not only strengthen diplomatic ties but also deepen the people-to-people connections between the two nations.

Although the formal diplomatic relations began in 1985, the longstanding friendship between Bhutan and Switzerland dates back to the early 1950s. His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo and late Fritz von Schulthess-Rechberg, the owner of the Swiss commercial enterprise Desco, shared a close personal connection.

Celebrating the 40 years of diplomatic relations this year, a reception and photo exhibition were held yesterday.

At the event, the Foreign Affairs and External Trade Minister said Switzerland has been one of Bhutan’s earliest and most trusted development partners.

The Swiss supported in establishment of national institutions such as the Judiciary and the Anti-Corruption Commission.

Additionally, major projects included the construction of the Paro and Samtse Colleges of Education, implementing Renewable Natural Resources projects and constructing vital suspension bridges, among other.

Helvetas Bhutan, a Swiss-led organisation for development cooperation and humanitarian response, is also marking its 50th anniversary this year.

Since 1975, the organisation has implemented projects funded by the Swiss government, contributing significantly to Bhutan’s socio-economic development.

The Royal Government of Bhutan also acknowledged the strong humanitarian bond between Bhutan and Switzerland, reflected in the close cooperation between the Bhutan Red Cross Society and the Swiss Red Cross Society.

In celebration of the 40 years of diplomatic relations, a delegation of Swiss Parliamentarians, led by National Councillors will visit Bhutan in October this year.

The formal diplomatic relations between Bhutan and Switzerland were established on 16 September 1985. And the relationship continues to exemplify lasting friendship and meaningful cooperation.
