Bhutan’s rich culture, tradition, and development philosophy are taking centre stage at the ongoing World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. The country celebrated its Expo National Day in the Japanese city, coinciding with the birth anniversary of His Majesty the Third Druk Gyalpo and Teachers’ Day back home.
The Minister for Industry, Commerce and Employment, alongside Japan’s State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, graced the celebrations.
During the celebration, the industry, commerce and employment minister, Namgyal Dorji highlighted Bhutan’s commitment to sustainable and holistic development, rooted in its philosophy of Gross National Happiness.
The minister said the Expo is also a platform to explore opportunities for Bhutan.
“We are showcasing our culture, trade and investment opportunities. It is a great marketing opportunity for us. So, it is like introducing ourselves to the world and that way bringing in a lot of economic advantages and a lot of opportunities.”
The event featured traditional Bhutanese ceremonies and cultural performances by artists from the Traditional Performing Arts and Music Division, offering people a glimpse into Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage.
The Department of Trade is leading Bhutan’s participation in collaboration with other government and private agencies.
At the Bhutan Pavilion, visitors can explore five key themes that reflect Bhutan’s development philosophy:
Happy Future, Good Governance, Culture Preservation, Environmental Conservation, and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development. These themes are brought to life through immersive exhibits, videos, and interactive experiences.
Alongside, a commercial pavilion managed by the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry is also showcasing Bhutanese products, culture and tradition.
At the special invitation of the Government of Japan, Bhutan is participating in Expo 2025 under the national theme “Saving Lives for a Happy Future.”
Expo National Days are special occasions that recognise the contributions of official participants, including countries and international organisations, while promoting cultural exchange and international goodwill.
The Japanese counterpart also commended Bhutan’s unique development approach and expressed hope for stronger bilateral cooperation.
The World Expo 2025, themed “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” has drawn participation from over 158 countries and international organisations, with over 28 million visitors expected during its run.
