The annual Jungwa Chidoe Kurim began today at the Pangrizampa Druk Phodrangdhing College for Astrology in Thimphu. It is presided over by the former Tshogki Lopen. More than 200 monks will perform prayers during the nine-day ritual.

This prayer ceremony is for the continued peace, prosperity, and longevity of His Majesty The King, His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, the Royal Family and for the wellbeing of all sentient beings and for the peace and prosperity in the country.

Hundreds of devotees came to offer their prayers and receive blessings.

Sonam Rinchen, Vice-Principal of the College said “We have been organising it for the last 21 years. We hold it annually to pray for the peace and prosperity in the country and to ward off natural calamities.”

As per astrology, after 41 years of Buddha’s demise, Buddha was reborn as Lord Manjushri at Jana Rewo Tsenga. After that, the King of Jana Kongtse performed the ritual to ward off disasters of four natural elements and the ritual came to be known as Jungwa Chidoe.

It is believed that attending the ritual helps cleanse one’s misfortunes for the year. It is not necessary to perform any additional rituals at home.

The ritual will end with Lhamoi-tongtshog next Saturday.
