To mark International Women’s Day today, Bhutan Cricket Council organised a special Women’s T20 Celebration Match across six districts on Saturday. Themed “Accelerate Action”, 132 women, participated in the event.
In a move to empower women in sports, participants from Thimphu, Paro, Punakha, Wangdue Phodrang, Samtse, and Sarpang took part in the T20 matches.
The initiative aims to challenge gender biases, create opportunities for women in sports, and inspire the next generation of female athletes.
“Today, we conducted an activity to empower women and break barriers through cricket. As we have observed, many women are not stepping forward or taking on vital roles in society. Through this initiative, we aim to raise awareness and help them recognise their importance in society,” said Deki Yangzom, the District Coordinator, Thimphu.
12 teams, two each from the participating districts took part in the matches. The participants are cricket players of various schools.
“I am proud to have participated in this celebration match coinciding with International Women’s Day. I feel grateful for this opportunity. In the future, alongside my academics, I want to explore and create opportunities for myself in other sports as well,” said Mamta Rai, a participant.
“Regardless of the result, it’s evident that we have learnt a lot through this valuable experience. We were able to witness our progress after a really long journey in this wonderful sport and also strengthen our sportsmanship,” said Sonam Choeden Dorji, another participant.
The event serves as a powerful reminder that progress comes from breaking barriers and fostering inclusivity.
The event honours the passion and power of women as they step up to the crease, not just to play cricket but to drive change.
