The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced plans to develop infrastructure projects in the Indian state to complement the Gelephu Mindfulness City. Speaking to the Indian media yesterday, Minister Sarma said that Assam’s objective is not to create a twin city or compete with Bhutan.
The chief minister was among the high-profile guests at the 117th National Day celebrations in Thimphu, last month.
Minister Sarma was talking about his recent visit and how Assam can benefit from the Gelephu Mindfulness City, which is poised to become a business hub for the South Asia region.
“His Majesty has informed me that there will be billions of dollars investment in the city. The city will also host some of the biggest names in the world. They have a grand plan. The King of Bhutan is also keen to ensure that Assam benefits from this initiative.”
He also spoke about discussions with His Majesty The King, envisioning Assam as an investment hub while Gelephu focuses on high-end luxury living.
The Chief Minister announced plans for a railway line connecting Guwahati to Gelephu and a six-lane highway linking Bongaigaon and Gelephu.
“I am hopeful that the Government of India will soon announce a railway track from Guwahati to Gelephu. Via Kokrajhar will be a different railway track. If you run Vande Baharat kind of luxury train there, whoever will come to Gelephu will also come to Guwahati.”
The Chief Minister discussed Bhutan’s offer to share its water resources with Assam for irrigation and electricity projects.
He said that the recent visit to Bhutan has opened new opportunities for cooperation between Bhutan and Assam, with long-term plans that go beyond immediate developmental needs.
“Today, Bhutan is exporting all their goods through Jogigopha. Yesterday, four stone-laden ships also began their journey from Jogigopha to Bangladesh. They mentioned that they will also use the land port of Golapganj. Ultimately, their plan is to expand transportation options in Bengal, and they aim to develop another green area called Assam.”
The Chief Minister said that His Majesty has assured him of a visit to Assam in 2025. Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay will also visit the state for the Assam Investment Summit.
