His Majesty The King graced the 117th National Day celebrations at the Changlimithang Stadium today. His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and other members of the Royal Family were also in attendance. More than 20,000 people, including 200 international guests, were also present.
His Majesty The King, Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen and their Royal Highnesses Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel and Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck were received in a traditional chipdrel ceremony.
Other members of the Royal Family were also in attendance.
A historic moment was added this year with the first batch of Gyalsups marching alongside the armed forces.
Various cultural programmes added colour to the festivities.
“It is a great privilege for me to have the opportunity to attend the 117th National Day. I think it brings all of us together to celebrate the independence and sovereignty of our country,” said Chimi Dorji.
“I always attend the National Day celebration at Changlimithang. However, due to the pandemic, we could not attend for a while. I seized the opportunity this year, and though I had to spend the whole night here, I have no regrets. The event was worth it,” said Pema Khandu.
“It is my first time attending the National Day celebration at the Changlimithang Stadium. I am very happy that I got the opportunity to witness the event and listen to His Majesty’s speech,” said Lemo.
“I came from Paro yesterday to attend this event. I am overjoyed to have had the opportunity to attend and hear His Majesty’s speech,” said Pema.
“It was a great experience for me today, especially after enduring such harsh weather and staying overnight. Listening to our King was very inspiring, and I’m excited for the evening program as well,” said Chencho Zam.
The Tashi Labey marked the end of the day. The celebrations brought unity and pride, leaving people already excited to return next year to celebrate together once again.
