To address crime, drug abuse and domestic violence in Gelephu Mindfulness City, Police along with The PEMA Secretariat, RENEW and the National Commission for Women and Children conducted a five-day awareness and sensitisation programme. The initiative was aimed at creating a safer, crime and drug-free community through preventive measures.
During the programme, stakeholders presented their roles and responsibilities, encouraging open discussions to gather feedback and recommendations.
Participants also raised concerns about the root causes of domestic violence, substance abuse, and alcohol consumption.
To curb those issues, they recommended banning alcohol and drugs, reducing the number of entertainment centres, and providing proper guidance for children from a young age.
Dorji Norbu, a resident said “At a very young age, we must teach our children about the good and negative habits and help them think positively.”
Mon Bir Sarki, a Desuup said “If the parents take care of their children with proper gu\dance, they will not have to visit police station.”
Colonel Passang Dorji, Deputy Chief of Police said “We are instilling in the people that, let us make our community clean and clear. So that we can bring peace and clear off drug abusers, drug traffickers, criminals, domestic violence and all the crimes that are being committed in every society is being committed by our children, our relatives, our brother, sisters.”
The feedback will be shared with the relevant offices for further interventions.
Colonel Passang Dorji said “We collected recommendations from the people. Four stakeholders will be going back to the headquarters and stand and stay. We will evaluate the feedback that we got. We have to see and segregate the feedback. We will have to see under whose responsibilities this is.”
More than a thousand individuals including attended the five-day programme.
