Tomorrow, 20 of Bhutan’s top athletes from the 20 districts will compete in the second selection round of this year’s Druk Gi Nyagoe Drendhur, the country’s premier strongman competition, in Thimphu. Chosen from across the country, the competitors have undergone intensive training and medical support to ensure they perform at their best. Only 10 will progress to the next stage, bringing them one step closer to the championship on National Day.
Among the competitors, 40-year-old Pasang Dorji from Bumthang stands out as one of the most seasoned contenders. A former champion, he is preparing for his fourth appearance in the competition. Pasang attributes his enduring strength and consistent performance to his commitment to continuous learning and unwavering perseverance.
Pasang Dorji said, “When experienced people teach you techniques or methods, you have to be willing to come forth and learn it. Even the ones who were not selected from the districts but want to participate, you have to keep working and keep being determined, and you can do it.”
The youngest participant, 23-year-old Dorji from Chhukha, said he is competing to win but also to help preserve Bhutan’s cultural heritage.
“This competition is important because it is a part of our culture. We have to keep it alive. And even though most youth can’t compete, the youth are interested in this competition, which keeps the culture alive,” said Dorji.
Another standout is 26-year-old Jimpa Tshewang from Trongsa, who holds the record for the fastest time in district selection rounds at three minutes and one second this year. He is determined to bring Trongsa its fourth title.
He said, “Trongsa brought home the title of the Nyagoe championship three times. So, this year, I will try my best, and I hope to do the same.”
As the competitors undergo rigorous training, their trainer said that maintaining their health is their top priority, given the intense physical demands they will face during the competition.
“They are genetically very strong. That’s why if we teach them proper techniques and diet, it will enhance their performance further. That’s why we have discussed the amount and the quality of diet they should take today,” said Tandin Wangchen, the trainer.
The 10 athletes advancing from tomorrow’s selection round will move on to another selection round on December 12. This final selection will narrow the field to the top five finalists, who will compete for the championship during the National Day celebrations on December 17.
