Yet another strike in Assam, India, has affected the mobility of Bhutanese travellers. All passenger buses leaving from Phuentsholing and plying through the Assam roads have been stranded.

The three days strike (72 hours) began this morning.

A group of college students on vacation bound for Gelephu, Phuentsholing and other Southern Dzongkhags are stranded in Samdrup Jongkhar town. They tried crossing the gate last night but were stopped by the police on duty.

Farmers of the Eastern Dzongkhags who have come to sell their oranges at the FCB auction yard are disappointed with the fall in the price of mandarin due to the strike.

Business communities say the restrain on their mobility is impacting their day-to-day business transactions.

In Gelephu, only vehicle movement has been stopped. Day workers from across the border working in Bhutan and Bhutanese people going to Dathgari, an Indian town across the border, have not been restrained.

The strike is being called simultaneously by two different groups- All Adivashi Student Union in the Baska district demanding the release of one of its member in custody and the People’s Joint Action Committee for Bodoland movement demanding separate Bodoland state.

The strike is expected to end by Wednesday evening.
