Darla in Chhukha is one of the leading gewogs in dairy farming in the district. The majority of the gewog’s households pursue dairy farming as a source of livelihood. The gewog produces thousands of litres of milk every day, most of which is marketed to Thimphu. To improve the market facility in their locality, a milk collection centre was opened last Tuesday.

The milk collection centre in Chhumaedlakha will benefit the residents of five villages of Gengu, Yagang, Chhumaedlakha, Samarchen, and Sillangsa.

Besides enhancing marketing opportunities, the initiative will provide the community with a reliable source of dairy products.

“We can collect milk and sell it from this centre. Any unsold milk will be processed into dairy products like cheese and butter here. This will benefit everyone. Moreover, being on the highway to Lhamoi Dzingkha makes this an ideal location for the centre,” said Rinchen Dorji, Darla Gup.

“We are really happy as we got the infrastructure that we can use. It will help the dairy farmers a lot,” said Sarbajith Mongar, a dairy farmer from Chhumaedlakha, Darla Gewog.

“Previously, we rented a house to sell dairy products, which meant that 10 to 20 per cent of our earnings was spent on rent. Now, with this new structure, it will be much more convenient for the public, as we will no longer have to pay rent,” said Lalith Mongar, also a dairy farmer.

Gewog leaders said providing such facilities will benefit and encourage people to excel in dairy farming. The gewog constructed the facility at a cost of Nu 1.5 M.
