It has been exactly 50 years since Bhutan first opened to tourism in 1974, along with the Coronation of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. To commemorate 50 years of tourism in Bhutan, the tourism department unveiled a campaign by lighting 50 butter lamps at the Buddha Dordenma statue in Thimphu, today. The department has planned several activities for the next six months until National Day.

The department said that the initiatives will honour and pay respect to the “High Value, Low Volume” tourism policy gifted by His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.

Damcho Rinzin, Officiating Director, Department of Tourism
