The Eutok Samdrup Chholing Goen-Zyin Dratshang inaugurated its two new monastic structures in Paro today. The facilities include classrooms, a library, and a dining hall capable of accommodating around 150 monks. The Yonten Lopen of the Central Monastic Body consecrated the new structures. A spiritual instructor based in Singapore and his students funded the project.

Kesang Choden Tashi, the Executive Director of the Buddhist Art and Cultural Conservation Centre attended the consecration ceremony.

Eutok Goenba, located roughly four kilometres above Shaba Primary School, was established in the 12th century with an initial group of five monks, supported by the local community.

It was only in 2004 that it was handed over to the Central Monastic Body.

Following significant damage from an earthquake in 2011, the Eutok Goenba underwent renovation in 2013.

Recognising the need for additional facilities, construction of new buildings started in 2019 to address the shortage of hostels and other amenities.

“It was renovated in 2013 with support from Her Majesty The Royal Grandmother Kesang Choden Wangchuck. However, there were neither enough hostels for the monks nor a dining hall for them. So, in 2019 the construction of these new buildings started. It should have been completed within two years but the pandemic delayed its completion. The new building will greatly benefit the monks,” said Tshewang Penjor, the principal of Eutok Samdrup Chholing Goen-Zyin Dratshang.

Master Lin Tseng Jung, who financially supported the construction said that it was a great accomplishment for him.

“I want to thank the monks, Lam, and our local representative. It has been a great support to me for the past five years. And today, when the work is finally completed and handed to the Royal Family of Bhutan, I feel really happy and a sense of great accomplishment.”

Today, the Eutok Samdrup Chholing Goen-Zyin Dratshang is home to 63 monks and seven teachers.
