The Punakha District Court has sentenced Sangay from Guma Gewog in Punakha to nine years and one month in prison for raping a 15-year-old girl. The court passed the judgment last week.

According to the judgment, the 53-year-old man had sexual intercourse with the female student during summer vacation in June last year and impregnated her.

Although the man confessed to having sexual intercourse with the minor, he denied paternity of the unborn baby and requested a DNA test during the trial. If the paternity is confirmed, the girl can file a separate civil suit.
