After a gap of four years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Bhutanese exhibitors are able to showcase their products at the 10th Bhutan-India Regional Friendship Trade Fair in Gelephu. The five-day trade fair began on Wednesday at the Gelephu public ground. This year, the trade fair is being observed on the theme “strengthening bonds for economic prosperity”.

Business entities and promoters are hoping to establish contacts and explore market platform with the Indian counterpart to promote the local products.

Entrepreneurs from Chhukha, Tsirang, Dagana, Zhemgang and Sarpang are showcasing their products along with the Indian business people.

Around 60 exhibitors are showcasing a wide range of agro products, handicrafts and handlooms, textiles, ready-made garments and agriculture tools and machinery among others.

They say such a platform will help them in marketing their products both abroad and within the country.

“Having such a platform is important. We face market problems which can be addressed by such an initiative. We can market our produce to business community from India besides selling to local buyers,” said Karma Wangmo of Bhu Org Farm and Kar 10.

“I am hoping we can at least sell some even if we can’t sell in bulk. I came here to promote the products to both local and Indian buyers,” said Norbu Zangmo from Dagana FSO.

“Our local product is expensive compared to the imported ones because of the quality of raw materials. Even if there isn’t much chance of selling, with support from both sides we can promote the products,” said Jyoti Rai of Tsirang Naturals.

Officials from Embassy of India, and Assam and Bhutanese officials from various agencies inaugurated the trade fair on Wednesday.

The Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry organised the fair with support from Indian Embassy and fund support from a private vehicle dealer.
