The construction of the concrete bridge over Punatsangchhu at Khuruthang in Punakha is progressing well. According to the Department of Surface Transport’s regional office in Lobesa, 20 per cent of the works have been completed as of last month. Owing to the risks of accidents, the work to replace the old Bailey bridge began in January this year. It is expected to be ready for use by the end of 2025.
The old bailey bridge at Khuruthang which has been used for around 20 years has developed holes. Moreover, owing to its narrow structure, the bridge poses risks to both commuters and pedestrians.
Only one vehicle can use the bridge at a time and there is no sidewalk for pedestrians.
To ensure safety, the Department of Surface Transport also reduced the carrying capacity to 18 tonnes from 20 tonnes in July this year.
The old bailey bridge was constructed in 2003.
“Many people including those from Shenangna, Bajo, Khuru town and nearby villages use the old Bailey bridge. The bridge has been overused for the past 20 years. The old bridge is in dire need of maintenance and this is why, we have decided to replace the bridge,” said Choeda Jamtsho, the project manager at the Department of Surface Transport in Lobesa.
He said that excavation work for laying the foundation of the bridge has been completed.
Currently, construction of a river training wall is underway to protect the bridge abutment from the direct impact of the river.
In addition, sub-structure works including the construction of bridge footing and stand are ongoing. The project manager said that the contractor will complete the sub-structure works by April next year, before the onset of the monsoon.
Once complete, the bridge will connect Khuruthang to the Bajo Secondary National Highway and nearby villages. The new double-lane bridge will have a separate pedestrian footpath.
The bridge is being constructed by spending Nu 230 M funded by the government of India.
