The Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project’s environment division and the national biodiversity center in Serbithang are trying to save different orchid species which are in the danger of being wiped out by the hydro-power project.

The ongoing construction of 720 MW Mangdechhu Hydroelectric Project, will destroy about 219 acres of vegetation.

From within the affected areas, about 32 different species of orchids were rescued last April.

The Chief Environment Officer in MHPA, Dr.Durga said they are undertaking the project in order to preserve orchid species in the project area. She also said that there are plans to plant fruit trees in the project sites for the birds to feed.

There are about 215 species of both eatable and non-edible orchids are available in orchidrum, a house built specially for the rescue and preservation of orchids. They will be it back to the site if the species become extinct in and around the project area.
